Well this is uncomfortable...

...my 16yo daughter may have discovered my LJ.

On the bright side, she already reads slashy porny fanfic, so there won't be many surprises in here.

On the not-so-bright side, it's probably a bit disturbing that I'm considering that a 'plus'.

Personal hiatus - over.

Wow.  Two years.  It doesn't seem that long ago, in some ways.  In others, it's a lifetime.

Ah well.

Current fandoms:
Supernatural (of course - the original and the best!)
Teen Wolf (currently just started watching Season 2)
Sherlock
NCIS
Bones
Grimm
And sort-of-Arrow, in that The Other Half is watching it and I'm sort of being dragged along for the ride.

Oh, and I have tickets to Asylum in May, which I may be slightly excited about.  Just a bit.

Go Chef go!

We are off to a lovely hotel tomorrow for a Murder Mystery weekend, I have been emailing the organiser to check on the food as I'm on a strictly restricted exclusion diet for allergy/intolerance.  I sent her a looooong list of what I can't have, and the FABULOUS Chef has come back with a complete menu for me; I said I'd be taking soy milk and snacks with me but she said that Chef would take care of me!

I only hope it's as good as I hope!

Meanwhile... I'm looking at the 5-star menu and drooling.  Nom nom nom...

Vet fail.

Bloody vet.  Our usual vet wasn't there so we saw a different one; she doesn't listen, and she can't handle cats.

I told her Bailey won't take tablets.  I told her Jane our usual vet uses the plastic tablet-giving-thingy.  She said "I don't like that" and proceeded to try to give him the tablet with her fingers.  She nearly lost her fingers.  He's sitting there puffed up and hissing and giving her the Devil Glare, so instead of letting him settle down, she puts the tablet in the plastic thing and fucking tries again.  Like he's not stressed enough.  He was SNARLING and attacking her.  So she says she'll just do the examination first and tries to look in his eyes etc and you can see he wants to KILL THE VET.  His ears were flat to his head and he was just pissed as hell.  And then she tried to look in his mouth and she was surprised when he tried to bite her.  No shit, sherlock.

So I said, why don't you hold him and I try?  Because, you know, I have actually managed to give him tablets before.  No, she says, and she gets the vet nurse in to hold him.  He nearly had her fingers AND the nurse's fingers; the nurse was Not Impressed and gave the vet the Evil Eye of Doom before leaving.

Vet decided to give the worming drops on the back of his neck instead.

Smart move, vet.  The only fucking smart move you did through the whole exam.

Dawn chorus

On Weds night I was wide awake, sat up faffing on the computer and watching crap on t.v. until around 3.30am then went to bed and listened to the dawn chorus.  I woke up just before 7am, wide awake.

Thurs evening I couldn't keep my eyes open.  Fell asleep on Steve's shoulder at 9.30pm.

Friday night, wide awake again.  Went to bed at 4am, it was already light out.  Fell asleep, I dunno, sometime after 4; woke up at 6.30 completely wide awake, no chance of getting back to sleep.

Last night, we were at a party but I was knackered by 11pm, went home and woke up at 10 this morning.

WTF is up with my sleep patterns?

Kindle!

I have a Kindle!  I worked flat out for a month to get enough money to replace our boiler which is 17 years old and clunky and will not see the summer out.  And then I thought, fuck it, I am going to spend some of it on ME.

So I have a Kindle.  And many, many downloads, including some classics I have been meaning to read for years - Kim and Dorian Gray and Ulysses and lots of others which are FREE!

Aaand I have had it for four hours and may have already sullied it with porny fanfic interesting tidbits.

I win.

Feel like dancing

The sun is shining, it is a glorious May day, and I only have to work for one more week!  You know when you have that incredible lightness-of-being feeling?

That.  Just that.

I am taking my daughter out to a gorgeous National Trust house with a huge woodland walk, there may be some highly-frowned-upon paddling in the little stream, and I'm sure there will be an enormous unhealthy ice cream at some point.

I have decided my self-imposed hiatus from all fannish and lj-based activities can be relaxed a bit, as it's been over a year since I pulled an all-nighter reading a fic that I just could not put down.  It has been a hell of a year, family-and-friends-wise, both good and bad but mainly bad.  But things are now back on track and apart from the usual too-many-bills-not-enough-money, everything is looking up.

And to celebrate being 'back', I have to rec Dies Irae by AlchemyAlice. This is the way the Apocalypse should have been.

Taking a long break.

I have to take a break.  SPN and fannish stuff and lj are taking over my life.  I need to take a few months to breathe, to find my RL self again.

What a way to end a vacation.

Took my daughter to my parents holiday home, we all had a fabulous time with far too much food and fun.  My husband even got to spend the last few days with us - almost the first time I've seen him in five weeks as he's been off working around the country (and staying in 5 star hotels but lets not go there, not jealous at all, nuh-huh...)

Anyway, we all came home on Thursday and planned to have a good friend (almost a sister; her mum died several years ago and she's my mum's 'second daughter') over to stay for the weekend along with her daughter, finishing with a huge family meal hosted by yours truly tomorrow.

Friend turned up last night with Big News.  She is filing for divorce.

I can't say it's totally unexpected; her husband is a workaholic, hardly ever at home, and has worked abroad for the past 18 months - by choice.  He had an affair 3 years ago with my friend's Best Friend.  Well, ex-BF now of course.  He has now informed her that when he comes home next month, he will be staying for 3 years then is leaving to go back to America and wants her to give up her job, wants their daughter to leave her school (then aged 17), wants to sell their house, and all to drop everything and go there to be with him.  She has told him where to stick his nice idea.

After much wine and many tears, her and her daughter are both tucked up in bed in our house and I'm just - sick to my stomach.  I saw it coming, but it still feels like I've been kicked.  And tomorrow is our big family dinner.  Woo hoo. That will be just so cheery.  We still have to break the news to my parents.

I haven't had nearly enough Scotch yet to begin processing this.  There is half a bottle calling my name right now.

New! Pretty! Shiny!

I have a new laptop!!!!!!  \o/

I spent AGES trying to make sure I got the right one, reading all the specs, checking out computing magazines etc, then ended up getting the EXACT same laptop as we bought our daughter for Christmas.

Oh well at least I know how it works...

Of course, they look identical so I had to go and buy skins for them.  She has the TARDIS; I have gorgeous luminescent Angel wings:

I wonder where I got the idea for the wings...  *whistling innocently**

Computer fail. No time, no internet, no working keyboard.

Huh.  With all the family stuff going on, I simply don't have the time to get online as much as I'd like.  And when I do, my computer is Not Working.  It's a beat-up old laptop, connects to the internet when it feels like it, freezes up in the middle of important things (like updating Facebook and reading porn important e-mails) and now the left-hand keys are sticking so Q A and Z need to be hit twice before they'll work.  Makes typing very, very interesting.

I'm going to give up for a bit.  I'm looking at a pretty shiny new laptop and I will buy it as soon as I can divert enough money from the household grocery budget afford it by saving diligently.  Until then, I'm only breaking out the laptop for banking and email.  It's too much hassle.

need........ air..........

Oy.  Had a nasty asthma attack yesterday, I could NOT stop wheezing.  Phoned the doc after my usual meds didn't work, I'm now on oral steroids plus a horrible inhaler that gives me tremors.  Plus side: they worked.  Minus: I have to stay on them for five days.  Yay.

We did finally get my dad his birthday dinner, made him a fab cake and the whole restaurant sang happy birthday to him.  It was worth the wait.

Dear Life: Give us a break. Love, me. x

It's half term, and I was planning on lots of nice things, taking my daughter out for lovely trips and the buying of shiny!pretties and maybe the seeing of the seals again because they are Of The Cute.  AND it was my dad's birthday last week and we had planned a lovely meal at his favourite restaurant.

All plans are buggered.  Cancelled or postponed.  Because my uncle is in hospital and I don't have a car for half-term week )

I need to find something fun to do.

Seals! And Sam. And UKTV.

.... no, not the kind Sam broke.

We went on a boat yesterday to see the seals!  OoooOOO they were gorgeous.  A whole bunch (colony?  pack? wtf do you call a load of seals?)  It was FREEZING out there, but we circled just off the beach for nearly an hour and took loads of photos, and a seal hit the water and came up to LOOK AT US CRAZY HOOMANS.

And there was one itty bitty baby on the beach, waaay up there hiding behind Mom.  It was cute in the extreme but I couldn't get a decent close-up shot because the boat was pitching.

SEALS FTW!!!!!!!!!

Aaaand now I'm waiting for my friend to get back from the dentist, and we are going to sit down with coffee and chocolate and watch Sam, Interrupted, which I have to download and burn to DVD and watch DAYS after y'all because, you know, our TV SUCKS and is only just starting to show the FIRST EP OF SEASON 5.  Which also means I have to avoid my flist from Thursday til Monday because I don't wanna be spoiled.

Grr.

"Dear UK TV,

Get with the program.  BUY THE DAMN SERIES STRAIGHT AWAY, NOT SIX MONTHS LATE.

Yours irritatedly,

Lorin."

BTW, did you know that if you call the radio station whilst en route to the beach to get on a Seal Trip boat, and tell them it's your daughter's 12th birthday and the trip is a treat for her, and they then ANNOUNCE THIS including her full name and wish her a happy birthday ON AIR and also send you a personal text wishing you a great time and hoping you don't fall in (!), apparently this is NOT COOL and said daughter will be in a huff all day.

Hahahahahaha.  I WIN.

Writer's Block: Kill the music

[Error: unknown template qotd]
"The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" by Roberta Flack.  Oh. My. GOD.  Sloooooowly now - "..aaaaand laaast til the end of tiiiiime, my looooove".

My dad loved it and played it in the car when I was a kid.  No wonder I had motion sickness.  It's been re-recorded a bunch of times and they are all better than the original, but still whenever I hear it, I still hear in my head - "your face, Yoooouuuur faaaaace, YOOOOOOOOUUUUUR  FAAAAAAAAAAACE"

I'd listen to it all day for - oh I don't know, how much do I owe on my credit card?  $700 or thereabouts.

OK so I'm fickle.  Yeah.

In your face.

Labyrinth

... or rather, Labyrinthitis.

Is

Not

Fun.

I woke up yesterday and the room was spinning.  The doc diagnosed inflammation of the inner ear, so basically my whole balance is out of whack and I feel permanently drunk, without the fun of actually drinking.

To add insult to injury, the doc gave me anti-nausea tablets (it's actually an anti-psychotic drug, so apparently I'll be relatively sane while taking it, always a bonus) and said NO ALCOHOL while taking the tablets.  So not only do I feel drunk, I can't even have a shot of scotch to make me feel better about feeling drunk...

And she banned me from driving for at least a week.

In other news, my cat Bailey has either a mild infection or an allergy which makes him sneeze.  And sneeze.  And sneeze.  Apparently he's swallowed a squeaky toy at some point, because every sneeze is preceded by a squeak.  I am not laughing at him at all, nuh-huh.

itchy itchy itchy... thanks, Bob.

Oh my poor cats...   I've always bought Hartz flea spot-on; our local store hasn't had any for ages so I bought Bob Martins back in October.  My old boy Toffee (he's 15) started scratching about mid-November; he had some sore spots, I asked at the vets and they said if it wasn't fleas (I checked him: there was no sign of fleas at all) then it was probably a food allergy.  I changed his food, got all worried, kept checking him, gave him more Bob Martins just before Christmas - and lo and behold, found flea signs last week!  AND he has a bald spot where the Bob Martins was put on.  I had to wait til now to treat for the fleas as I had just dosed him with the spot-on, so today he's had a dose of flea meds, plus a flea collar, plus all his favourite spots have now been sprayed with flea treatment, AND my other cat Bailey has had a flea tablet which he was NOT IMPRESSED WITH (especially as I sat on his tail as I was holding him down).

So I have one cat with itchy sore spots and a bald spot on his shoulders; and another cat who isn't speaking to me, and my house smells of flea spray which is not really nasty but... it's definitely a 'smell'.

Bob Martins.  Flea-friendly, apparently.
